SAP2000 builds bridges the gap between CAD data and reality with one software package. Implicitly working at levels of abstraction that enable it to account for different materials, SAP2000 can optimize space savings in your design. With better, stronger and more durable designs, your loved ones may live on to experience the next generation of ‘SAP2000 masters.’ SAP2000 was developed at the California State University in Chico by a group of undergraduate and graduate students led by Dr. Talbot Baines and his research team. The focus of their study was on structural optimization and materials substitution in building design and construction. The software was first released in 1993 and has been under development ever since with the latest release being version 10.1 for x32/x64 platforms (2009–2010). The first version of the software was developed on a Silicon Graphics Image series 2 workstation using Octree data structures. The software development continued on an IBM-compatible 386 computer.
SAP2000 is used by many Universities around the world to provide students with real world structural analysis and design projects. Some of the most notable of these are listed below:
The professional version of SAP2000 is used for new buildings, renovations, retrofitting of existing buildings, steel pultrusion, bridge design and other similar tasks all around the world by professionals in structural engineering. Example applications
SAP2000 is built on the Object-based Octree data structure. The input data can be discretized surfaces like:
The output is:
SAP2000 uses the following algorithms:
Current and historic users of SAP2000 include:
SAP2000 version 10 was released in 2009 and includes many new features and enhancements, while also improving on established functionality. The user interface has been reworked to improve the flow of information and make the software easier to learn.
The add-in software add-ons such as Pipe2D add new features for reshaping structures inside the SAP2000 environment. Pipe2D is a toolbox of piping design and analysis tools for materials with a complex geometry, including:
Google SketchUp import tool lets users bring a SketchUp model into SAP2000 as a boundary representation, but not for modeling. Other 3D modeling packages can be imported into SAP2000 as well.
SAP2000 includes the following tools:
SAP2000 has been used extensively by professionals in structural engineering to answer technical questions such as:
The following applications are part of the Cal Poly Software Foundation commercial distribution programs : – Cal Poly Pipe2D Separation and the Cal Poly Concrete Design Kit (CDPK). 1.
